The BSNNP is pleased to announce that Drs. John Rolston (Neurosurgery) and Shan Siddiqi (Psychiatry) will be co-presidents for the 2024-2025 term. As expert in their clinical duties as they are eminent in their research fields, with Shan and John at the helm, the BSNNP is looking forward to another fascinating series of interdisciplinary presentations and programming featuring some of Boston's best and brightest in the neurosciences and beyond!
A few words from our co-presidents.
My first year in Boston felt boundless in its possibility. Back in St. Louis, I'd checked the Washington University neuroscience lecture calendar religiously, attending a handful of events each week. Boston felt like an intellectual candy store by contrast, dazzling and overwhelming. But this swiftly eroded into a poverty of riches—I found myself lost amidst a scholarly labyrinth, where everyone else seemed intensely fixated on their own slice of expertise. Unable to find the venue to engage in the expansive exchanges I craved, I withdrew, nesting quietly within my scientific nook for months, skipping even Grand Rounds.
Then I discovered the Boston Society. This was the gathering that I’d envisioned for my Boston life. At my very first meeting, I found myself in a conversation with Kirk Daffner, reflecting on his Washington Post article, “Reflections of a Dementia Specialist: I Want to Stop Working Before I Embarrass Myself.” I could never have imagined that such a luminary would pause to engage with a humble trainee. I kept returning—for case conferences, the Cobb Assembly, lectures—realizing that this society embodied the very essence of the field. It was a microcosm where debates kindled, hypotheses arose, discoveries unfolded. This society pressed the boundaries of clinical neuroscience, and the world followed in its wake.

As co-president of the Boston Society of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry, I am honored to help lead an organization committed to advancing these interconnected fields. I am particularly fascinated by how neurology, neurosurgery, and psychiatry overlap, touching on diverse aspects of the human experience, as they explore the very foundations of thought, behavior, and consciousness. This role allows me to promote collaboration and innovative education while enhancing patient care, all with a deep appreciation for how these disciplines shape our understanding of the human mind and condition.
~John
